Co-Generation Building

Location: Monterey Bay, CA
Developer: Salas O’Brien, CSU MB
Completion: 2005

To serve the needs of the developing California State University in Monterey Bay, Kava Massih Architects with Salas O’Brien was commissioned to design a central combined heat and power plant to serve new construction on campus. Due to its close proximity to high use buildings such as the library and future Student Union Building, a visually striking design was requested by CSUMB for an otherwise utilitarian building. Total floor area is 8,500 sq ft, encompassing boilers providing hot water to the campus as well as a 1MW co-generation system consisting of a reciprocating engine, generator and heat recovery equipment
