Ashland Market and cafe
Location: San Leandro, CA
Owner: Resources for Community Development
Completion: 2019
Resources for Community Development (RCD) worked closely with the County Community Development Agency (CDA) and the non-profit Mandela Marketplace to create a local-serving, small-business incubating retail space in the existing Ashland Place development. Ashland Place was completed in 2016 and included approximately 2,000 square feet of cold shell, unoccupied retail space on the corner of E. 14th St and Kent Ave. The CDA has worked with Mandela and RCD to develop a program for the space that includes the sale of fresh and packaged foods, a café that sells hot drinks and pre-made foods, and food stalls that heat up and serve food (cooked off-site). The goal of the initiative is to provide a space for local small business entrepreneurs to sell their goods and for local residents to have access to diverse, healthy foods.
