Bullseye glass emeryville
Location: Emeryville, CA
Completion: 2011
Bullseye Glass Company is a manufacturer of colored glass for art and architecture with worldwide distribution and a strong commitment to research, education, and promoting glass art. Their glass is handcrafted in Portland, Oregon where they began in 1974. Bullseye has Resource Centers outside of Portland where they sell sheet glass, stringer, frit, and powder—plus all the tools needed to work with them. They also offer classes to teach methods and techniques for working with colored glass.
In 2011 we were introduced to the Bullseye founder, Dan Schwoerer, who was looking for a location to open a resource center and gallery in the Bay Area. He settled on Emeryville as the ideal location; in part due to its centrality in the Bay Area but also to better serve the glass artists that he worked with in and around Emeryville. We helped him convert a 1,200 s.f. warehouse space on Hollis Street into a showroom, gallery and workshop including a complete seismic retrofit of the existing building. We kept the new work simple and tried to maintain the character of the open warehouse…a simple white-wash of the existing structure helped to take some of the rawness out of the space while preserving its industrial character.
